In rural areas, many retirees face isolation, unsuitable housing for aging. Vacant buildings and declining village centers further weaken social ties. Without alternatives, seniors are often forced to leave their communities or live in inadequate conditions, leading to a loss of autonomy, security, and social engagement.

Innovative solution

Habitats des possibles addresses the lack of suitable housing options for retirees in rural areas by offering shared, inclusive homes designed with and for local communities. Our homes allow seniors to maintain their independence with private spaces, foster daily mutual support through shared areas, and stay connected to village life. We aim to support meaningful aging by promoting freedom of choice, social ties, and well-being, while revitalizing rural centers and encouraging a more collaborative, affordable model of living.

Key results and benefits

The shared house of Artolie, opened on June 25, 2022, marks a major achievement after five years of collaborative work. It now hosts 7 residents, aged 64 to 93, in a shared living space designed for both privacy and community. The house includes 8 private apartments and 231 m² of shared spaces like a lounge, kitchen, dining room, and garden. Through 13 participatory workshops, future residents actively shaped the design and project vision, fostering a strong sense of ownership. Located in central Lestiac-sur-Garonne, the house promotes social connections with easy access to local services and transport. This first house exemplifies community-driven development, offering retirees a supportive and sustainable living environment.

Potential for mainstreaming

Shared senior housing, like the Maison de l'Artolie, is not an isolated initiative but part of a growing movement in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. With 4 additional projects underway in Mas d'Agenais, Castillonla-Bataille, Noaillan, and Monflanquin, there is a clear momentum towards scaling up this model of living.

These projects are designed to meet the same needs for retirees: affordable, community-driven housing that supports both independence and social connection. The success of the Maison de l’Artolie demonstrates the feasibility and demand for this type of living arrangement, showing that it can be adapted and expanded to different regions and communities.
